The Wildcats had a stellar sports weekend these past few days, as I am sure many of you know. I was graced enough to attend both the soccer state title game, which Ignatius won 4-2, and the football Holy War Pt. II vs St. Ed’s, which the boys won 20-17 on a game-ending field goal by Tim Shenk.
I had the opportunity of riding down to Columbus for the soccer game with ~35 students and a few other adults, Andrew, Brian Henderson (current JV and big-time soccer fan), and Fr. Styles. The boys were well behaved and courteous to our bus drivers. More importantly, they cheered like I had not seen them cheer all year. By far the best performance by the Ignatius student section in any game thus far this year. Props to them, and of course to the soccer players, who pulled away with three goals in the second half. Congrats also to Coach McLaughlin, whose team has won three of the last four state titles, and five of the last eight. Truly masterful, truly a dynasty.
As I have had ever since the mid-point of the season, I had a chance to live those words of the alma mater, “Years in passing cannot sever / ties of new days from the old,” at the football game last night. I joined Mark Kaiser, Dave Srsen, Sam Knezevic, and Rob Zdankiewicz, all class of 2006, to watch one of the greatest Ignatius football games I (or anyone) have ever seen. Great to see that the brotherhood created at Ignatius so often can last for many, many years after graduation (yes, I realize it’s only been 5 years, but it’s still impressive). Let’s hope that continues for decades to come. Oh, and by the way, great job, football team!
Congrats to the soccer team for another successful season, and Godspeed to the football team next week against Mentor!
